Why am I getting a “Weak Security Error"?


Some devices may show an error while connecting to networks that use an older security standard. Apple iOS 14 may also flag most older Wi-Fi connections (WEP, WPA, WPA2 TKIP or WPA2 TKIP+AES) as "Weak Security." 

To fix this error, you need to log in to your modem's configuration page and change the Authentication type to WPA2 and Wireless Security/Encryption mode to AES.


Find your modem brand below and follow the instructions

SmartRG 516

Open a browser and visit http://192.168.1.1/

When prompted, enter admin for the user and kh3mfMAK for the password

Click Wireless

Click 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz depending which network you are using

Click Security

Change the WPA Encryption to AES

Click Apply/Save at the bottom



Hitron CGNM-3550

Open a browser and visit http://192.168.0.1/

When prompted, enter cusadmin for the user and password for the password

From the top menu, click Wireless

Click 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz depending which network you are using

In the Multiple SSID Settings, change the Security mode to WPA-Personal, change the Auth Mode to WPA2-PSK, change the Encrypt mode to AES

When completed, click Save Changes at the bottom

Click Apply/Save at the bottom

Open a browser and visit http://192.168.0.1

For the username, enter cusadmin and for password enter password.

On the top menu, choose Wireless

From the sub-menu, choose Wireless 2.4 Ghz (or Wireless 5 Ghz depending on what interface you are modifying).

Change the Security Mode to WPA2-PSK (AES)

Open a browser and visit http://192.168.0.1/
From the Status menu (the only menu available) choose DOCSIS WAN
Leave the Username and Password empty and click Log In.
From the Wireless menu, click Wireless Security
Change the Security Mode to WPA2-Personal
Change the Encryption to AES
Click Save Settings
